Event Description

Los Angeles native and multi instrumentalist, playing all of the saxes, clarinets, flutes , oboe and English horn however for this recording playing tenor, soprano and bass clarinet Marty Krystall will release his new CD  Liquid Krystall Displayed on July 24th, 2012!

With a rich back ground in a variety of music from  rock, R&B and classical and appearing on recordings of Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Roy Orbison, Frank Zappa, Leo Kottke and Keith Moon, Little Jimmy Scott and Terrence Blanchard. All the diversity comes through in this dazzlingly brilliant CD!

Liquid Krystall Displayed easily shifts moods from the soul jazz sound evoked on the Grammy award winner Jerry Peters tune Round and Round. While Marty Krystall's own considerable compositional abilities are revealed with great effect on again the soulful title track Liquid Krystall Displayed.

Stretching his writing and playing Marty's Tenor Baddness does just that and he has a much harder edge to his robust sound. His third and final tune of the 10 ten set is Beybluhor with a lighting quick tempo to start then shifts down to almost a Monkish feel and finish!!

Speaking of Monk, Marty's version of the not often heard Skippy with Jerry Peters on organ, and the more familiar Introspection with Peters on piano here, are simply exquisite. With yet a different movement Marty's bass clarinet playing on Billy Strayhorn's Blood Count really displays all the colors of the instrument.

Marty is joined by superb musicians for this recording. Along with pianist and organist Jerry Peters is guitarist Calvin Keys who adds just the right mix of colors and feeling  throughout all his solo's. Peter Erkskine romps, rolls, and swings and maintains a very hip stage for all the things going on around him, from the vintage to the contemporary.

Long time friend and musical collaborator bassist Buell Neidlinger completely locks it all together where there is no escape! Marty and Buell have formed several groups including Thelonious from 1984-1990. Additionally Buell composed the last track on the CD, Billy's Blooze a very smokey and soulful blues.

Marty pays homage to another reed master with his arrangement of Benny Golson's   Stablemates.  It was Golson who later said of Marty Krystall's playing “you speak with a loud and clear voice”

The clear and distinct sound can be heard throughout Marty Krystall's new CD Liquid Krystall Displayed available July 24th, 2012.

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Barbara Carroll On Piano Jazz

Pianist and singer Barbara Carroll was host Marian McPartland's second guest during the first season of Piano Jazz. Thirty years later, Carroll makes a return appearance to reminisce with her friend about their experiences at the Hickory House and the Oak Room. Carroll gives a charming performance of "Very Early" and McPartland improvises a musical portrait of her guest.

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.
