Hi! My name is Ben and I just found this group. Since there were no discussions yet, I thought I would start with one we can all benefit from. Being an active member of The Jazz Network Worldwide is a great start, but the best way to support jazz, or music, or art in general... is to go see it! So I pose the question:

Where is your Dallas Music Hang?

In my opinion, the best recurring jazz event in town is hosted by Shelley Carrol at The Amsterdam Bar every Monday. No cover. I am never disappointed. Aside from getting to watch a master of the tenor saxophone play some amazing things, Shelley's band is ALWAYS killin'. He also lets other local jazz musicians sit in, which reminds me constantly about how much talent there is running around Dallas, TX. The last time I was at The Amsterdam Bar, my old professor, Jim Riggs, was sitting in with Shelley on bari sax, a sight I had never seen.

As a music lover, I am also inclined to step out of the realm of jazz and check out some other genres. One of my favorite hangs is hosted by The Funky Knuckles at The Pussycat Lounge every Monday. It is a jam session where a lot of really great musicians come out and hang. The Funky Knuckles original music has roots in jazz and ventures into fusion and funk which will leave you wondering how the hell they do it?!

Another one of my favorite hangs is hosted by RC & The Gritz at The Prophet Bar every Wednesday. It's another jam session right in the heart of Dallas. Many of the members in The Gritz have played with one of my favorite vocalists, Erykah Badu! I saw a Stevie Wonder VS Prince night there that was ridiculous.

RC "Rceeezy" Williams-Keys, Cleon Edwards -Drums, Braylon "Brother B" Lacy-Bass, Claudia Melton-Vocals, JA- Born-mpc, Leo Saenz-guitar

2548 Elm St. Dallas 75226 cover $5 to $20

As a working musician, I don't always get to hang at these places because my working schedule varies so much. So, where do you all like to check out music in the area? I'm always excited to find new places to see great shows!

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.
