Dear Colleague,
As Chair of the Congressional Entertainment Industries Caucus (CEC) and in celebration of Black Music Month, I’d like to invite you to a Black Music Month Celebration hosted by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and the American Association for People with Disabilities on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 4:30 pm in the Capitol, Room HC-5.

“The Soundtrack of a Generation: Doo-Wop and Early Rhythm and Blues” will be a panel discussion featuring Doo-Wop and early Rhythm and Blues performers. The panel, moderated by Dr. Nick of XM Satellite, will focus on the musical tradition of the 1950’s and 60’s. Panelists will include Johnny Mason’s Clovers (Rock and Roll Pioneer Award Winners), The Legendary Orioles (Diz Russell), The Jewels (launched by Bo Diddley/James Brown Revue) and The Marquees/Moonglows (Marvin Gaye started his career with this group). This event will provide first hand knowledge of the Doo-Wop era and provide insightful dialogue about this pioneering genre.

The program will commence at 4:30 pm with light refreshments followed by a Hand Dance demonstration (D.C. Hand Dance originated in the Washington, D.C., Area in the mid-1950s as D.C.’s own version of the “jitterbug” or “swing”).

The Black Music Month Celebration panel will conclude with performances by The Legendary Orioles, The Marquees, The Jewels and Johnny Mason’s Clovers.

Join us as we highlight these performers and celebrate the music that made an impact on American culture and became the soundtrack of a generation.

To attend, please send your RSVP to Unique Webster at rsvpaapd@earthlink.net. Seating is limited.

I invite you to join the Congressional Entertainment Industries Caucus. To join, please contact Dorinda White at 202.225.7084 or email her at dorinda.white@mail.house.gov.

Sincerely,
Diane E. Watson
Member of Congress

Funk/R&B Clinic
Sunday, June 15, 2008

Funk and R&B are always in demand...

Master the rhythm and groove of this popular music.

This is the workshop you've been waiting for. Get your groove on by devoting an afternoon to instrumental funk and R&B styles from some of the greatest names in popular music.

Herbie Hancock, The Average White Band, Dave Sanborn, Maceo Parker and Jaco Pastorious will provide our repertoire, and YOU will provide the funk!

Top local and national players will give you the inside scoop through classes, jams and demonstration. Here's how the workshop unfolds:

Intro: Meet your teachers. They'll get things started by playing a few songs they've played on stages all over the globe.

1. One Hour Class: Instrument Specific. Guitar, bass, drums, piano and horns will break into groups. See how your instrument contributes to the sound.

2. One Hour Group Class We'll add the rhythmic components, piece by piece, to build the sound. Our instructors will model what you'll do in the next class.

3. Spend two hours playing in small combos grouped by ability level. We'll help you tighten up the grooves in our repertoire.

Our faculty has backed such greats as Ray Charles, Marcus Miller, Najee, Maysa and Percy Sledge. They include: Robert Sullivan (guitar), Dan Reynolds (piano), Jeff Antoniuk (sax), Bernard Hairston (bass), Todd Harrison (drums).

Enrollment:
32 Instrumentalists Max

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
