This is a wonderful idea, Jaijai. It is a pleasure being part of your network and as we all are works in progress and artists it is always good to be open to learning ways of improving on what we do. A problem I see is bridging the gap between local, national and international levels of the music. I have tried to start a PacificNW group on TJN, and acouple of people posted, but I am going to have to go pump it up some more. My interest is in helping venues to find a way to book new acts because its more risky. Of course booking an already-famous musician is less risky, you know he will draw. The usual solution is to not pay the new acts. I have seen groups drive all over the PNW, at their own expense, oftentimes with bandleaders coming out of their pockets to pay their musicians, or simply they drive 100 miles for the tips jar. There's got to be a better way.
Also, there's strength in local networks that is not being leveraged. I recently joined a jazz meetup in Seattle. It's a wonderful idea - jazz fans pooling together to meet at local gigs. Even if its just 10 people. For Indie jazzers if a group of 10 people walks in at one time to their gig, it's a great networking opportunity to create new fans and expand their contacts. And for small venue operators, when 10 people walk in at once, it makes good business for the establishment. It's fantastic way to support local music.
It's nice to hear about gigs 3000 miles away, and of course we have a couple of places where the world-famous people tour through (and you drop 60 - 100 dollars if you attend).
But the raw material of the jazz industry is in coffee shops, and smaller venues, and people banding together locally to go to their gigs and network with each other. A huge potential exists to make the market more lucrative.
That's just what I am seeing.

One of the most important things we have to do about this music we call jazz is ezactly what is happening now on The Jazz Network, having vital discussions on how to resolve the problems we face in this vast marketplace. However, discussion is not enough. We, in this jazz community, are good at talking about solutions, and contributing ideas, but fail in most cases to do something about it. I'm not including those who ARE doing something, but others who sit by the wayside and make no contribution.
One idea, is to organize. We've already started right here on the Network. We now have a place to start and encourage each of us how to do the things to change the direction we are in currently. We have the power of a collective voice. How do we use that?
All the comments made here are factual, but not new. The Jazz Is Dead comment has been made before, but it is still surviving. I used to tell my radio listeners tuning into my radio show, that there is music out there that they will never hear because no one is playing it, due to how the radio market is controlled and focused on a small segment of the public.
Why are articles currently being written about the lack of jazz
in the marketplace, and yet, jazz at Newport, Detroit, Boston and many other locations are having festivals where creative music is constantly being introduced. There IS creative artists and music out there being heard and recorded. We must do all we can to make sure that creativity is healthy and being heard as far as we can make it.
So, my challenge to you is this, what are WE going to DO about it?
