Tell us a little about your background...
More than three decades of progressive experience in all aspects of music product development, licensing, sales, promotion and distribution for national and international markets.

THE MUSIC SPECIALIST consults new and existing entertainment businesses, increasing their bottom line while making them technically astute. THE MUSIC SPECIALIST also develops international licensing and sub-publishing. Mr. Johnston is an accomplished speaker and has lectured for numerous conferences and the Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee Bar Associations - Entertainment & Sports Lawyer Continuing Legal Education Divisions. THE MUSIC SPECIALIST is one of the oldest music information websites in existence (www.asha.com).

Mr. Johnston has worked for Ariola Records, EMI America, Stax Records and Arista Records in a staff position. He has also worked for Capital Records, Sony, Warner Bros. Records, Island Records, Mercury Records and a host of Independent labels as an Independent Marketing Specialist and Promotion person.

For a period of over ten years he was co-owner of Joeyboy Records, J.R. Records, On Top Records, American Faith Records, Joeyboy Publishing BMI, Beam of Light Publishing ASCAP, To Soon To Tell Publishing SESAC, and Bazooka Film works.

He has held the position of Director of Urban sales for the K-Tel Corporation, Simitar & associated labels, Vice President of sales for Platinum Records and Mind Seed Records and Films, also Director Distribution, Marketing & Sales for Luke Records & Films.

This past year I have had the privilege to speak at several different conferences, seminars and open mic sessions to fledgling and professional producers, artists, musicians and entrepreneurs. What I've found in approximately 90% of these people is their desire to obtain a major record deal and not become a business owner. I find this desire to be entirely counter productive, selfish and lazy; a major record deal is completely the wrong way to run your career.

He is aptly called The Music Specialist.

No Positive Reputation = VULTURES

Today’s entertainment industry has created a totally new type of divisive character. The person who makes the saying “shady business”, a reality. The main reason this person exists is due to the lack of Positive Reputation among today’s industry players.

The contemporary music business has created a host of new players and new positions, unfortunately the honesty of these players is not based on their actions. A few examples of the new breed hustler starts with their ability to consistently fin… Continue

Arbitrons Portable People Meter has created a real stir within the Black, Latino and minority radio communities and now has caused a definite division of corporate interests.

Let me explain. The Portable People Meter (PPM) is a passive electronic measurement device worn by a listener that allows Arbitron to know what radio signals the wearer has listened to during the day. It not only measures AM / FM radio signals… Continue

Senior Moments Part 2

Here you are over 40 years old and you are creating or have already finished your new project. What can you do to get this project sold?

Radio is not going to give you the time of day.

Retail wants a story BEFORE they order your product. Sounds like a catch 22 situation, however you do have a few directions that you can turn to. Let’s explore them together.

NICHE

The key word for your project is that you must find your niche market and promote it severely. Most “old school” acts are c… Continue

Getting Paid From Labels

While sitting in a music conference panel recently it dawned on me that the Independent labels had created a whole new series of individual and small group owned independent SUPPORT businesses . These businesses are flourishing while the independent labels that use them are not.

As a Hip-Hop / R&B / Neo Soul / Rock / Country or Gospel artist you feel that your material should be the hottest in the country. You just don’t know what to do to get started, so based on what you’re seeing and hea… Continue

Senior Moment

2008 has rolled around and I have come to a great realization. I have become a senior statesman within the entertainment industry. Here I am looking towards the upside of 60 and it feels good to be alive.

Something else has also crossed my mind.

There is an entire era of artists that I grew up with, listened to, marketed and promoted still alive and making music without a clue that their music won’t be played on the radio, marketed on television, ordered by stores nor heard within any popular… Continue
