Composer, arranger, bandleader, and drummer Art Lillard hails from Miami, where he began studying music and played with the great jazz master Ira Sullivan. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in composition and arranging at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Since 1970 Art has led and co-led jazz ensembles of various sizes and worked as a sideman in many groups.
Art’s nine-horn Heavenly Band has been performing since 1987. Their recording “Reasons to be Thankful,” was released on Summit Records in 2006. Art's seven-piece swing band, Blue Heaven, appeared on two episodes of CBS Television's "Guiding Light" series in 1998.
Art has written hundreds of compositions and is often commissioned as an arranger. His works have been recorded by several other jazz artists.

Art, it was great to see, hear and play with you when you were here in Portland recently. Just wish there'd been an opportunity to do more of that (I seem to have dropped off of David V.'s e-mail list, so I didn't hear about your gig at the Cave until it was almost over). I look forward to your next trip this way!
