AIN'T NO SUNSHINE

JESSE CAMPBELL

THIS IS RAY BROWN JR.

RAY BROWN JR.

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!

Eighty years ago, barriers were broken when Benny Goodman took a mixed race band to play jazz to Carnegie Hall.

Review: The Bad Plus, 'Never Stop II'

Each album by The Bad Plus can be understood as a planted flag, a marker of group identity. Hear the jazz trio's first record with new pianist Orrin Evans.

Songs We Love: Kat Edmonson, 'Old Fashioned Gal'

On the first single from Old Fashioned Gal, Edmonson pines for a respite from pop-up ads and notifications, for a phone "inextricably connected to a wall."

The daily Stockholm newspaper.

Dagens Nyheter Oct 14 2008 edition, concluded that Stan Getz was partly to blame for the financial crisis now plaguing the world. The reason: After an article in the New York Times

A Victory for Jazz, or Just Grammy Being Grammy?

By BEN RATLIFF

Published: February 12, 2008

When something newsworthy or popular or positive happens to a jazz musician — a big award, say — many in the jazz world feel astonished for about four seconds, then quickly act very smug. You know: We’ve been sitting here patiently, full of our aesthetic virtue, so used to being ignored, and the world has finally come around to our point of view. Are we happy about it? More to the point,… Continue

Hi Bev,

Just looked at my March 7 comment. Must have been distracted. Here it is again...in English. :-)

This page is like a jazz museum. What a tribute to one of the masters. Your dad has inspired me and generations of saxophone players worldwide. Thank you for sharing....Does everybody tell you that you have a feminine version of your dads face?

Bev, I'm grateful for your beautiful comments. I believe that you must be very intuitive (inTUNEitive!) because your words came at the right time. I've been in one of those musically disheartened phases of late, and you really uplifted me. Now, if we could just get the skin twins here uplifted a bit! haha... Remember the Jane Russell commercial? "Lifts and separates." Oh, sure it does, more like "chafes and irritates!" See, now I'm laughing because of you! Sometimes we don't realize what our presence does for other people, where you're concerned, it's always love. (not to mention that you're smart and a smartass - I love that!)
