My name is Christian Salut and my nickname is Ton Ton, so everybody knows me as Ton Ton SALUT... and I play the drums.
I'm 58 years old and have played professionally since I was 16. I did a million things until 1980 when I've chosen my jazz life for good. Since then I've played with hundreds of musicians including Sonny Stitt, George Coleman, Sonny Simmons, Herb Geller, Bobby Porcelli, Turk Mauro, Peter King, Ted Curson, Wynton Marsalis, Jerry Gonzalez, Benny Bailey, Joe Newman, Steve Turre, Glenn Ferris, Sarah Morrow, Mal Waldron, George Cables, Siegfried Kessler, Lou Bennett, Rhoda Scott, Judy Blair, Jorge Pardo, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Lucky Peterson, Joshua Breakstone and many others from all over the world.
Long time ago I spent some time in New York City, paying my dues to this music and also a lot of time in Africa, playing with the djembé master Maré Sanogo and many diva singers from Mali to Cameroon.
Today, besides the sideman thing, I enjoy a lot playing in the "Hip Jazz Trio" with my friends Abdu Salim (sax & flute) & Akim Bournane (bass). We played together more than 500 concerts since we started in 1993. I love also Abdu Salim's fabulous Freedom Jazz Band with the great musicians Frank Lacy (tb), Philip Harper (trp) and Alain Jean-Marie (p), plus Akim and myself. Recently I've started two new and ambitious projects : a group named Quartier Sud "music from the souths" and an international sextet with the japanese pianist and composer Junko Moriya...
Every summer you can see me at the festival of Marciac where I'm playing and teaching. I also teach classes of Jazz History and Rhythm Workshop at the National Conservatory of Toulouse.
Of course I also have a private life, raising two daughters and spending as much time as I can reading and traveling...
