Tell us a little about your background...
When I'm asked "tell me a little about yourself" what comes to mind first is the short answer "I was born into jazz". I am a proud daughter of a jazz pioneer, trailblazer, composer, arranger, sometime vocalist, sometimes referred to as the "uncrowned prince" of his genre and a man of musicial passion, Kenny Dorham.

A supporter of his fellow Texans and jazz musicians, a brother to Max, Cecil and Randy, encourager to Joe, a visionary along side Horace, a friend to Jimmy, Milt, Monk, Dinah, Cannonball, Nat and so many, many more.

My dad made Brooklyn, N.Y. his home a short time after arriving in the city and becoming involved in his community. Starting out in in big bands he moved up to sideman and then band leader with hundreds of compositions, arrangements, movie appearances and vocal recordings.

With many credits under his muscial belt his light shown even brighter when he was selected to replace Miles Davis in Charlie Parker's band, and I often wondered if that's what dad and Miles talked about the last time I remember Miles visiting our Brooklyn home.

While I continue to write my book about dad, I'll add snippets about his musicial milestones and travels, the artists and and people he worked with and some of the backstory shared with me by musicans who were there and the fans who I am still meeting after many decades most everywhere I go.

As dad traveled the world performing I made it my job to always know where he was in the world by bringing a map to my dad and have him point out where he visited and where he was going next. I'd mark the days off on the calendar before going to sleep as a way to stay connected and keep track of when he'd return home. This was my foundation for learning about the world, other cultures and my love of travel. Add in family trips and visits around the country at an early age I even have my original airline ticket on American Airlines from Idlewild Airport (now JFK) to Oakland, California where some of dad's family lived.

Transforming my love of travel and desire to see what's around the next corner, 35+ years of personal travel & 10+ years agency experience I'm an industry certified agent and consultant, running a full service travel business with multiple specialties including custom, group & event travel and can assist your to plan your travel where your passions and your interests can be best enjoyed.

With the advent of jazz finding new places to call home on cruise ships and growth of international festivals I can now bring my expertise and passion together. I've posted some of the most recent pictures from my jazz cruises and festival travel. In 2007 I attended or organized travel for or escorted clients to - Atlanta Jazz Festival, Atlanta, GA, North Sea Jazz Cruise and North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, Harlem, NY and The Jazz Cruise's caribbean sailing.

2008 will find my clients on The Smooth Jazz Cruise, Capetown Jazz Festival, CBJC - Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium's 9th Annual Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and the first Playboy Jazz Cruise which is generating tremendous buzz.

I hope you will consider traveling to many of these exciting events and destinations or a destination you're thinking about. Your fellow travelers and music lover's are waiting to meet you and share common experiences as we each contribute in our own way to support and grow jazz and remain active citizen's of the world. Dear Evette,

Tour Peru is in the books for 2009- July 31-Aug 9. Last year was a terrific success. Check out one participant blog here:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=72782036

Let us know if you'd like to put a group together. We have two early sign ups and room for 32 more. We are also considering adding a Christmas tour to Peru.

Also, where are you located? The band has an extended tour of the US coming up in January and February.

Hope to hear from you soon.

best,

Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet
