Judy Carmichael for extended London gig!

American stride pianist and singer has just told me of her up-and-coming London gig for next month. In an email she said “I can’t help myself, I love England and I’m going back. If you’re in the area, please come hear me at the wonderful Boisdale of Belgravia, August 3-15 (except for the 9th). I played Boisdale for two weeks last August, and happily, they’ve invited me back. This is a convivial spot, with spectacular food and a wonderful history of hiring great musicians. I’m pleased to be…See More

Mali Latino play Jazz Cafe

Posted on July 31, 2009 at 1:30am 0 Comments

That great new amalgam of world talent Mali Latino play the Jazz Cafe in London tonight. With stunning new compositions like the ballad 'Voyage' and the vibrant 'Congas' (featuring Colombian Emeris Solis) they are reinforcing their rightful place on the stage of world music. Featuring Malian stars Madou Sidiki Diabaté (kora) and Ahmed Fofana (balafon/flute/guitar), together with vocalist Doussouba Diabate, the atmosphere on stage will be… Continue

Omar Puente and wife win Law lords Ruling.

Posted on July 30, 2009 at 1:09pm 0 Comments

Omar Puente, the Cuban jazz violinist well known to audiences through his superb playing with jazz saxophonist superstar Courtney Pine, went to the House of Lords in London today to support his wife in their fight to clarify the law in the United Kingdom on assisted suicide. Debbie Purdy (Omars’ wife) suffers from multiple sclerosis and wishes, at some date in the future, to travel to the Dignitas Clinic in Switzerland to end her life in a… Continue

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.
