I teach bass guitar lessons in the Washington, DC metro area. Here are a few endorsements from former students:

From TW in Maryland:

" You are a great bass teacher because you:

    Have patience

Love working with kids and adults

Can help anyone of any skill level

Have an extensive knowledge of technique and theory

Work with a student if he doesn't understand something until he does, sometimes coming up with multiple approaches to understanding/applying the concept until the student does get it.

Make sure the student has fun!"

From DW in Virginia: " I really enjoyed working with Mark, and made great progress in my playing. Unlike many teachers who just throw out information and tell me to go practice, Mark has a great ability to sense where I am as a player and recommend the steps that will get me to the next level. Highly recommended."

From AG in Maryland:  "Our son was a student of Mark Foster's, and learned so much more than he did when he was with a previous teacher. He told us that he wasn't just learning songs, he was learning music. He gained so much knowledge and ability from his lessons. The only reason we are not still with Mark is because he moved away from our area. I have had the opportunity to see Mark interact with his own children, and feel completely comfortable and safe with him. I highly recommend Mark Foster as a Bass teacher, as does our son."

From SN in Maryland:
"I am a tutor and was a school teacher previously. Mark has given our daughter bass lessons since the age of 14 years old. She is now 17 years old and still looks forward to
lessons with him. Mark is someone that you can trust with your child and he is a great bass teacher."
From DP in Maryland:
Mark is an extremely gifted and capable instructor for all levels of bass instruction.  I was a beginner with little to no knowledge of bass technique/musical theory, but he broke things down in ways that were easy for me to understand, yet mentally challenging at the same time.  During our sessions together, I was constantly inspired by his incredible level of talent and musicianship.  Not only was I impressed by his skill, but I also truly enjoyed our time together.  He is a positive and encouraging individual who finds joy when his students grasp new concepts and succeed.  I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in learning the bass and widening their musical horizons in general.
My rates are reasonable and I travel to my students. Feel free to contact me at markfretless@gmail.com . I teach in Washington,DC., Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.

Subject: Recommendation for Mark Foster

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 8:59am 0 Comments

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is my personal recommendation for Mark Foster. I have had the pleasure of working with Mark Foster for approximately two years. I found him to be consistently punctual, reliable, honest, and pleasant, tackling all assignments with efficiency, dedication

and a smile. In interactions with students, he showed kindness, patience, and an ability to adapt his teaching style to the learning styles of his students. I found him to be a highly…

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Barbara Carroll On Piano Jazz

Pianist and singer Barbara Carroll was host Marian McPartland's second guest during the first season of Piano Jazz. Thirty years later, Carroll makes a return appearance to reminisce with her friend about their experiences at the Hickory House and the Oak Room. Carroll gives a charming performance of "Very Early" and McPartland improvises a musical portrait of her guest.

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.
