Tell us a little about your background...
Singer, Mary Talbot Fee, grew up in a musical household in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Daughter of an opera and musical comedy performer, Mary was raised listening to classic choral tunes, show tunes and opera. Her mother, Angela Talbot was the founding director of the Berkshire Lyric Theatre and performed at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1972. Mary began her own singing venture at age 6 as a childrens choir member in her local church in Richmond. One moment sticks in her mind as the point where she fell in love with jazz. At a party at her parent’s home, Mary, aged 4, was seen hanging out with the jazz musicians and playing under the piano. A special love had begun.

As a college student, Mary majored in Modern Dance and performed as a dancer in many dance and theatre productions, including Cabaret. Her senior recital included a piece choreographed to a collage of a capella blues songs sung by Mary, herself.

Music continued to be a part of her life as Mary sang with a Steel Drum Band in her twenties. At the time she was also a student of Kevyn Lettau, renown jazz vocalist. Mary’s career began to blossom when she became a student of Amber Whitlock. Amber and her husband Rob Whitlock are well respected jazz musicians, producers and arrangers. Both have recordings to their credit most notably including the late Michael Brecker and Anthony Jackson. They recognized Mary’s love of Jazz and added her to their roster at Sketchin’ Records. Rob’s arrangements centered around Mary’s gift for languages as well as her vocal range. They brought in some incredible musicians that are well known in the music industry including Charlie Bisharat (former musical director for John Tesh), Trey Henry (of Tierney Sutton’s Band), Cliff Almond (Michel Camillo, Manhattan Transfer, Chuck Loeb), Kleber Jorge (Sergio Mendes & Kevyn Lettau) and Luis Conte (James Taylor Band).

Joni Mitchell’s Gift

Joni Mitchell sat down in your way

Distracting you from wispy bones

And brittle, cropped hair

Keeping you anchored to the path

The one you scatter unknowingly

With petals of colorful love

Sowing seeds of hope and promise

Which grow strong with the loyally devoted

For they are light and buoyant

Because of you they move

In rhythms and soaring tones

Recalling tunes so vividly…

Picking blueberries alone in the woods

A sad and lonely hay ride

To the cold head stones of the quarry

A red bird sat on the window sill

Waiting for his soul to fly

Red hair, red blood, a red bird

And my red eyes

Planting forget-me-knots over his head

Seasons changed and time’s train

Left a clouds of sorrow in her path

A red bird sat on his gravestone

Waiting to say good-bye

Red hair, red blood, a red…

Melting the Mic

Soft, warm winds circle past tongue and lips,

Temperate tones swirl and emerge,

Gaining momentum as a howling storm,

Her tropical surging song melts the mic.

Tear and years fly uprooted through amplified blasts,

Humid, sultry breaths ride and slide free chords,

Crying out, knocking on boarded windows of defeat,

Her tropical surging song melts the mic.

Hard feelings, no longer buried,

Scatter,… Continue

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
