Just love singing ....and learning all the time.
OK...jaijai has been nagging me so here goes....started in the church choir....sang semi classical and Scots folk (from my mother's side) My father's side, however, won the day as his love of big band jazz infused my consciousness for most of my childhood. When I met a guy called Alan McPike who plays keyboard and sang Moonlight In Vermont I felt like I had musically come home and I started learning all the standards ... a couple each week as I could only do this part time. What I love about jazz is that every time I listen or play is is different and I hate to get bored.
Now I am at a bit of a crossroads....I have a full time day job which pays the mortgage and am singing regularly with an amateur big band but really want to stretch myself further. I have signed up for a jazz vocal workshop during the summer and hope that it will give me the kick up the musical a*s that I am needing. As Ella sang "There's A Lull In My Life" so there is in mine. Singing with big band arrangements is great but the anticipation and feeling I get in my belly( and it's a fair sized belly!) when I work with a small group fires me up in a way that nothing else in my life does. I recently hooked up with a superb guitarist called Steven Coutts at a wedding and the chords he pulls out of the bag just make me smile.......
Well that's it for now guys. I'd love to hear from folk who fell (or feel)the same way
Hugs

Just back from France where I had the MOST wonderful time at Loire Music's Jazz Vocal Workshop. What a week that was.....studying with Anita Wardell and Angela Ashmore Elliot has been inspirational and uplifting in ways I could not have imagined.Having been absolutely terrified of doing it at all and never having done anything like it before, it was a step into the unknown. I found that their warmth, patience and insights into all aspects of performance went way above the call of duty on many occasions. Tristan,Joe,Rob,Barry and Marie were wonderful to sing with.Thank you all. If you want to sing jazz at all I would highly recommend this course. It not only gives you confidence try new things but you come home with a cracking bunch of new friends who all have common aims and goals.
Singing "Ye Canny shove yer granny aff a bus" in 5 part harmony at 3 am in the garden will stay with me forever!!!!!

Hey Pat, The 31st August was a wee while ago when you kindly left a message for a fellow Scot - so all I can do is apologise for being better late than never!! As I say, I've been rather absent for TJN for a few months all around, just work and family stuff. Amazing to see what a big and small world TJN is and bringing many amazing folks together via Jajai's inception. Hope things are good in Glasgow! :O) Alan

Hi Pat, nice to hear from you. As you say I am well chuffed with the fundraising result and already planning a few events for next year. I am hoping that one of the events will be a big outdoor jazz concert in a local Fife park next June or July and I will be asking all of my jazz buddies if they might like to take part. Since it is a charity event I will be looking for folks to give their time and talents for free so I would be grateful if you and the band might consider coming along and I will get back to you once I have more details.
Still hoping to catch some of your gig at Callander but I also need to check in on another act who's show is on at the same time on Saturday because we are looking to book them for our new jazz club and my colleague in the venture insists that we see acts perform before booking them !!!
cheers
Grace

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.

Grady Tate On Piano Jazz

Grady Tate began his jazz career as a much-celebrated drummer, backing such icons as Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, and Quincy Jones. Tate has since traded in his skins for a microphone at center stage, where he delivers smooth and soulful baritone vocals. With pianist John di Martino, Tate sings "Everybody Loves My Baby" and "Where Do You Start."

Woody Herman At 100: 'A Blues Player From His Heart'

He was a soulful reedman, an amazing talent scout for decades and a bandleader of one of the country's most popular acts. Born in 1913, Herman led "Thundering Herds" that were both big draws and well-respected by the likes of Igor Stravinsky. Here are five recordings which still sound fresh today.

Edmar Castañeda And Friends On JazzSet

Hear passionate improvisation across borders on Colombian harp, Argentinian bandoneón, Venezuelan cuatro and vibes from the U.S. In a set with Castañeda, his trio and special guests perform at the Americas Society in New York.

Miguel Zenón Quartet: Live At The Village Vanguard

Ever since he started becoming one of the best alto saxophone players in the world, Zenón has drawn from his upbringing in Puerto Rico. But, like many Puerto Ricans, Zenón lives in New York — where his quartet of 10 years has finally been invited to play the Vanguard. It presents new music in concert.
