Meeting with James Gavin

Posted on May 4, 2009 at 2:00am 0 Comments

I was walking around Columbus Circle at a loss. I was supposed to meet James Gavin, the author of the bulky & detailed biography on Chet Baker, "Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker." I am the translator of the Japanese edition of the book. Meeting with the authr of the book is always a very special experience which I would never miss. I had talked on the phone on the day before and James had given me the address of a coffee shop in his neighborhood, which turned out to be a bit… Continue

Last week, I helped Chick Corea with some interviews as his translator/interpreter. I knew I would have to be cool just as always. However, I couldn't help getting especially excited, as the interviews were for promoting his DVD on the reunion band "Return to Forever" taped at the Montreaux Jazz Festival last summer. The guy at the label told me to be there in my favorite "R.T.F." T-shirt. Just as expected, Mr. Corea wore a broad smile when I introduced myself.

It was "Return to… Continue

Amazing Night with the Horn Players

Posted on December 13, 2008 at 9:58pm 3 Comments

Last Friday, I went out to the Blue Note Tokyo kind of too early even for the first show. Well, I would have to be there to help David Sanborn with the interview before the show. In fact, I had been unusually nervous about this job, since I had been informed of that it would be more like a friendly talk between David and his old friend, Takeshi Ito, Mr. T-Square. My client was planning to tape their talk on video and might add the footage on David's DVD. So.... there shouldn't be anything going… Continue

Simply Unforgettable

Posted on December 13, 2008 at 2:30am 0 Comments

The day before yesterday, I set the timer of my old-fashioned video to tape a late-night music program. At the end of the last month, I was honored to be hired to help Carole King, who was in Japan doing her "Welcome to My Living Room Tour" with several interviews. One of them, the one I did for the music program was finally going to be aired. On Friday morning, I got up early and played back the video excitedly.

To tell you the truth, I had been under a heavy pressure as I had been… Continue

talk with John Oates

Posted on December 4, 2008 at 9:00pm 0 Comments

Only an hour ago, I hung up my phone after a forty-minute talk with Mr. John Oates.

I am often asked to do telephone interviews by the clients, who need information for making brochures & liner notes of the Japanese edition of the new CDs.

This mission, in fact, was supposed to be done yesterday. Somehow, there was a misunderstanding about the dates between Mr. Oates and his manager, and I was just left alone standing by the telephone, being a (sort of) nervous wreck as the… Continue

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.

Grady Tate On Piano Jazz

Grady Tate began his jazz career as a much-celebrated drummer, backing such icons as Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, and Quincy Jones. Tate has since traded in his skins for a microphone at center stage, where he delivers smooth and soulful baritone vocals. With pianist John di Martino, Tate sings "Everybody Loves My Baby" and "Where Do You Start."

Woody Herman At 100: 'A Blues Player From His Heart'

He was a soulful reedman, an amazing talent scout for decades and a bandleader of one of the country's most popular acts. Born in 1913, Herman led "Thundering Herds" that were both big draws and well-respected by the likes of Igor Stravinsky. Here are five recordings which still sound fresh today.

Edmar Castañeda And Friends On JazzSet

Hear passionate improvisation across borders on Colombian harp, Argentinian bandoneón, Venezuelan cuatro and vibes from the U.S. In a set with Castañeda, his trio and special guests perform at the Americas Society in New York.

Miguel Zenón Quartet: Live At The Village Vanguard

Ever since he started becoming one of the best alto saxophone players in the world, Zenón has drawn from his upbringing in Puerto Rico. But, like many Puerto Ricans, Zenón lives in New York — where his quartet of 10 years has finally been invited to play the Vanguard. It presents new music in concert.
