Tell us a little about your background...
“Rita Wilburn” Singer, Lyricist, Writer, Born in Mississippi, about 45 miles south of Beale Street. I was introduced to many elements of Music, Etta James, Betty Wright, Mahalia Jackson, Shirley Ceaser, Ted Taylor, Bobby Bland, B.B. King, Al Greene, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Chicago, Loretta Lynn, Elton John. At the age of 6, is when I think I found my voice singing at church.
I began entertaining my hometown at the age of 9 by singing on the front steps of the local Barber Shop with guitar legend "Stonewall Mays". By age 10, I was the youngest person to ever perform the National Anthem for the State Cotton Bowl. I was presented numerous awards from High School, Talent Shows, and Private Organizations throughout the states of TN, MS, and ARK. At the age of 16, I performed at the Apollo Theater. After high School, I relocated to Memphis, where for many years I performed as a Guest Solo Artist in many clubs on the Memphis Famous Beale Street. I became the Lead Vocalist for the band called "TRANSITION". We performed for many Night Clubs, Weddings, Corporate Events, Festivals such as “The Mid-South State Fair” and “Memphis in May“. The band also had the honor to open for recording groups/artists such as Colour Me Bad, Memphis Greats "Al Green, the Bar-Kay’s, Issac Hayes, Ruby Wilson, and the pleasure of working with Mr. Willie Mitchell.
Now residing in Miami, FL where I have formed my own band ( Rita Wilburn Band). Where I present many chapters of my life in the form of music. Jazz, Blues, R&B, Gospel, Rock. I can honestly say, I have no favorite type of music. Each one sends me to a whole different place. I am blessed to say in this Short time, We have performed at many Corporate Events, Clubs, Weddings, and Festivals throughout South Florida. I also had the pleasure to perform at the Annual Key West "Goom Bay” Festival for the last 2 years. I am a proud member of the South Florida Blues Society. Women in Jazz south Florida, and also The Sunshine Jazz Organization.I not only try to captivate my audience with the softness of Jazz, the heartache of the Blues, and the joy in R&B, but also mesmerize the country audience by tickling their earlobes with a Southern Mississippi twang…
“I hope to create the perfect mood that will relax your mind and take you on a Sweet Journey, of the greatest music on earth.”
