From Rio With Love -- The Ultimate Fela Mix

Posted on October 17, 2008 at 5:30am 0 Comments

The sound bites of the great Fela and those paying ode to him are both from the past and present and while they are familiar, the arrangement is not. Today’s master piece comes to us from Brazil’s own DJ Fenando and is another living testimony as to how music transcends all boundaries and remains the true cement that holds humanity together

JAZZING IT UP (PART TWO)

Posted on May 5, 2008 at 10:28am 0 Comments

Every once in a while we writers are reminded of the power of our words and are held liable, be it in a compliment or a scold. To be a complete writer in my humble opinion one must have had one’s bread buttered on both sides, not just because it teaches humility and keeps one grounded but it also prompts for in depth research and quality control and thereby indirectly a better end product.

While not all feedback I received regarding “Jazzing It Up Part 1” was not positive because I…

JAZZING IT UP (PART ONE)

Posted on May 5, 2008 at 9:30am 0 Comments

Circa 2 years ago in a moment of weakness I volunteered to teach one or two “Art” related classes each year at a Minimum Correctional facility around the North East of the US, where a bunch of young men who had strayed of course for whatever rhyme or reason were being rehabilitated and folded back into society. Last year I introduced them to the refreshing complexity of Chinua Achebe’s “Things fall Apart” and since they were mostly of African heritage, the presentation had been an…

A Man Called Baba - Fela ( THE HIGH PRIEST OF AFRO JAZZ )

Posted on February 20, 2008 at 10:35am 0 Comments

I remember seeing him for the first time just as if it was yesterday. Through the clouds of smoke and altered by the “come hither” glow of red and blue bulbs that ordained the club, he stood with relative ease…. an omnipotent symbol of a bold and angry new Africa.

I was instantly mesmerized and would be for life.

He was bare chested and seemed oblivious to the thin film of sweat that defied the cool wind being dispersed by huge ceiling fans above and that covered his… Continue

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN...

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!

Buster Williams
