Someone forgot to tell Sandy Kastel that you can’t have it all…

Sandy is a published author, accomplished sculptor and has a successful career as a songwriter and multi-genre entertainer. This former Miss Nevada and Miss America contestant also runs her own record label Silk and Satin Records. Kastel is not the typical beauty queen. There is nothing typical or predictable about this artist, except that whatever she touches turns to gold. When Sandy’s parents met, it was a true case of jazz meets country. Her mother, born Wanda Jean Armstrong, in Vernon, Texas, was a child performer singing country music with her three sisters. Jazz saxophonist, D*** Kastel, met Wanda Jean, a brunette beauty, when he was playing with a big band at a Hotel in San Francisco. At seventeen he started touring and playing jazz with big bands including the Army Air Force Band in Washington, DC, handed down the musical talent. He continued performing as a musician sharing the stage with such icons as Stan Kenton, Henry Mancini, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Judi Garland, Sinatra and the Rat Pack. It wasn’t until Sandy’s father joined the Harry James’ Band, that he packed up and relocated his family from Texas to Las Vegas. Sandy, her parents and her younger sister, Linda, would soon realize a new journey had begun. As a child, much like her parents, Sandy would soon become a natural, performing on stage. Sandy Kastel was so determined with her musical journey, at age four, she gave her Dad fifty cents to buy his Frank Sinatra records, which she later performed to for her neighbors and friends. It wasn’t until second grade when Sandy was singing The Yellow Rose of Texas at her class assembly that she decided she wanted to be a singer when she grew up.

Sandy comes from a long line of talented women; artists with roots in the Midwest. Her grandmother, Dixie Lee Cole, an avid photographer and painter raised in Oklahoma and Texas, passed down the tradition to her four daughters, all of which wielded the pencil or brush in an artistic manner. Kastel’s country roots go as far back as her great-great grandfather, who fought in the Civil War and her great-grand parents, who owned a country diner on route 66 in Midland, Texas, where she spent time as a little girl.

Throughout her childhood and into her adulthood, she achieved many successes and awards. Kastel’s musical journey led her on a path, not only to have a thriving successful career on the stages of Las Vegas, but to Atlantic City on the stage at the Miss America Pageant competing as Miss Nevada. The stories and passion engrained in this country girl living in a Vegas world found their way to a recording studio in Nashville and became a new album entitled INDIANA RAIN.

In 2009 Sandy teamed up with industry heavy hitter, Ron Aniello, Multi-Platinum, Grammy nominated record producer (Lifehouse, Jars of Clay, Patty Scialfa,) who produced the majority of the project including the title track INDIANA RAIN; also bringing on board to round out the project Jimmy Haslip, two time Grammy winning bassist (YellowJackets,Bruce Hornsby, Chaka Khan) and legendary Grammy nominated jazz keyboardist, Jeff Lorber (Kenny G, Michael Franks, Amy Winehouse), who co-produced a number of tracks on the album, including a re-make of Bryan Adam’s duet Rock Steady with Bonnie Raitt.

INDIANA RAIN is the result of combining Kastel’s multi-cultural musical background with what happens “when life takes a detour”. Keep your eyes on INDIANA RAIN – Sandy Kastel will never fail to take you on a journey…

My time with Sandy....

Meeting Sandy Kastel was like being caught in a gentle breeze that brought an array of colorful flowers to view. This woman is strong-spirited, driven and artistically gifted in many areas of business. Not only is she an accomplished vocalist, song-writer, record label owner, sculptor, motivational speaker, author, devoted wife; she is a visionary. Spending time with Sandy was like a whirlwind of creative ideas coming one after another, birthing focused thought, for its solid fruition. It was inspiring to see all the various touchpoints that express her command of presenting excellence. Her musical background spans from jazz to country hitting every side along the way. You can throw any chart in front of her and she will command it as her own. There is a never-ending cycle of brilliance on her journey. There is no wonder that she is included in a book that shares stories about “Life Choices” for she is one that knows what she wants, where she's going and how to get there. Sandy plans on bringing her musical performances worldwide as well as her motivational speaking gifts. We not only get the opportunity to hear selections from her two lastest CD’s “ The Event” Only In Las Vegas and “This Time Around” but we will soon get a ‘sneak peek’ of her new single “Indiana Rain” to get a feel of ‘the other side’ of Sandy.

Happy Trails to you Sandy with warm wishes,

My Mom and Tammy Wynette

Posted on April 7, 2010 at 9:14am 0 Comments

When I was a little girl my mom played Tammy Wynette records on our phonograph player and we sang along. Stand by Your Man and D-I-V-O-R-C-E were the two songs I remember the most. I would belt out the lyrics when I sang, just like Tammy.

She was a huge influence on me growing up, the way she sang she represented a strong woman, who set an example for women everywhere, both by 'standing by her man' to 'standing up for herself' when the times got rough.

I'll always remember her… Continue

"It's All About The Music"

Posted on March 31, 2010 at 6:27pm 0 Comments

"It's all about the music," I told him as we sat in the Starbucks in Franklin, TN. "This time I want to record 'my' songs. Don't get me wrong. I love singing the standards I grew up listening to." I paused to take a sip of my chai tea. The room was filled with people in meetings, on their computers, making deals and writing songs or screenplays. Behind the counter the employees were taking orders, making coffee and dishing out delectable sugary confections, hustling to keep the line moving.… Continue

Welcome Sandy
Thank you for joining the Jazz Network!
And check out my rhythm world!

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
