Tell us a little about your background...
Musician & bandleader, player of saxes, flutes, wind synth, vocals, and shaker of things percussive...

In any combination, from solo, duo or trio, on up to 6-10 pieces, we come with a broad palette of jazz "colours", always authentic, smooth, soulful & professionally presented..

I play tenor, alto, soprano saxes, sometimes even a saxello, a lot of flute, occasionally an alto flute, sing a bit, shake things percussive, and of course my trusty WX-5 wind synth, for those all-important dueling guitar solos, groove organ grinds, tasty harp, & even some steel drums for just the right touch.....

We've played gigs in all kinds of venues: The Ga. Dome, Blaisdell Arena , Aloha Stadium, Lahaina Civic Center, & The Crater Festival, in Hi., Taste of Atlanta, Charlotte Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Centennial Olympic Park, De Kalb County Jazz & Blues Festival, Earth Day Festival, Boulder, Co., Kingfest at the MLK Center, The Georgia Aquarium, etc, countless clubs & restaurants: At My Place, Nucleus Nuance, Palamino Club, Carlos & Charley's, LA, Nicholas Nickolas, Black Orchid, Row Bar, Honolulu, Blue Max, Longhi's, Maui, & others in Chicago, Portland, Boulder, SF, & even the O.C., 5-star hotels, country clubs, to backyards, living rooms, beach parks, or playing to whales out at sea...

Opened shows for Chicago, Bob James, McCoy Tyner, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter, Alex Bugnon, Warren Hill, The Pointer Sisters, Manhattans, etc., etc...

While mainly working in the genre of "Jazz", I've been all over the musical map, from concerts & recordings with Space Music artist Jonn Serrie, to performing &/or jamming with so many great artists, from Otis Rush & Junior Wells, to Stephen Stills, Mick Fleetwood, the Neville Bros., Indigo Girls, Elvin BIshop, and even one magical night in Lahaina, bringing in the new year with Dr. Lonnie Smith, George Benson, & Marvin Gaye, all onstage & jamming...

WOODSTOCK: WHEN WE GAVE PEACE A CHANCE

By LEONARD PITTS JR.

lpitts@MiamiHerald.com

On Saturday, it will be 40 years since 400,000 hippies descended on Max Yasgur's dairy farm for a concert.

Jimi Hendrix performed, as did Richie Havens, the Who, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Joan Baez, Santana, and Sly and the Family Stone, among others. It was billed as three days of ``peace and music.'' It became a generational signpost:… Continue

Ya Just Never Know....

I came across this today, found it eye-opening, but not at all surprising...

This story undoubtedly confirms a fact of life we here in America are all too painfully aware of.

If someone is not hyped up in the media, they'll get as much attention, pay, respect & props as a world-class, virtuosic, concert violinist, playing in the Metro!

Violinist in the Metro

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play… Continue

Martin Luther King Jr. on JAZZ

I always love reading this little talk of Martin's to concert audiences....

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF JAZZ

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Opening Address to the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival,

God has wrought many things out of oppression. He has endowed his creatures with the capacity to create—and from this capacity has flowed the sweet songs of sorrow and joy that have allowed man to cope with his environment and many different… Continue

Bravo!...bravissimo!... Steven Charles...world class human being...and musician too...your thoughts and music are so cogent for a world steeped in "hype" and "mediocrity" in so many places...
If you ever need images for a project , it would be an honour to work with you....and if you ever get to Maine (summer is highly recommended...winter is sooo over rated...lol (I'm a tarheel by birth)) I've got room in my old house on the coast....

Currently I'm teaching art at a school for kids with special needs..and I use a lot of music and jazz in my room....it's a magic language for those with limitations sometimes... and am looking for a new place for my next 20 years....

My very best to you and all those in your life...keep up your masterful works...peace man...always b

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
