How I feel about JaZZ

I believe that jazz is THE art form that found me. I love a great conversation and the improvisational ensembles that i have had the pleasure of performing with have been just that (but w/ instruments of course). Jazz is the art form that enables me to stretch my wings as far as i can and soar into a blissful "soundscape". There have been purely magical experiences when performing --this feeling i am constantly striving for. Though not always achieved, when i get there , it's sheer heaven (man , i live for that).

Absolutely wonderful book on Jazz improvisation !!!!

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This will certainly be the definitive source on improvisational jazz. A leader in the field, Berliner (ethnomusicology, Northwestern) covers all aspects of improvisation as art form, science, and way of life. Cutting no corners, he includes a vast range of article topics (from inspiration and arrangements to evaluation and audience interaction), music…

John Coltrane - My Favorite Things

Posted on January 23, 2008 at 2:42am 0 Comments

I decided to play my satellite TV jazz radio station thru my stereo system today. I listened to a schmorgasborg of really good jazz , then , I get up and go get my laundy , come back in the room and there it was......My Favorite Things (John Coltrane) is playing. Now this is one of my fist jazz cd's and i remember the feeling when i purchased it at a used cd store like it was yesterday. I have to tell you i fell in love with this record all over again. That steady tempo, McCoy tyner's…

Thanks for adding me on here! I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a jazz saxophone player -- Been one all my life. Started playing gigs in New York City when I was 15 years old. Now I live in Houston, and I released my debut album last year. I'd played on lots of other artists' albums, but I was always more focused on live performances for myself. I'm pretty happy with my album though! If you are interested you can check it out: http://larryslezak.com/blog/buy-the-album/.

If you get a chance, I'd love to learn more about you! Message me back if you have time.

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.
