Vicki Burns is a jazz singer who has been delighting audiences in the Bay Area for years. A vocalist with impeccable taste, a sure sense of rhythm and a glorious tone, she infuses each song with heartfelt expression, digging into the lyrics and melody for their richest interpretation. No wonder the great jazz drummer, Max Roach once described Vicki's singing as "..a gold mine..! " Others have variously described Vicki's vocals as "..spectacular, yet soothing.." and "..smooth as silk..." Originally from New England, she has brought her unique song styling to clubs, concerts and special events throughout the San Francisco Area and now to New York City. San Francisco performance venues have included: Yoshi's, The Plush Room, Enrico's, Downtown, Shanghai 1930, Little Saigon, Cafe Trieste, Bistro Yoffi, Anna's Jazz Island and Jordan's at the Claremont Hotel in the San Francisco Bay Area. In September 2008, Vicki released her first live CD as an exclusive digital release available from reapandsow.com. Entitled Vicki Burns Quartet "Live At Anna's Jazz Island" it has received airplay nationwide and garnered praise form such luminaries as Scott Yanow who says : "Vicki Burns has a limitless future. Her very attractive voice, versatile style and infectious delivery combine to give her her own memorable sound.” John Gilbert of ejazz.com says: ”Vicki Burns does indeed 'burn' on this recording. The stars were aligned just right when she was blessed with a singing voice that was made for the jazz idiom.” PPI Radio Award/National Radio Award 2008 for the radio series "Jazz on the Bay", hosted by Melanie O'Reilly and features interviews and the music of jazz musicians/vocalists of the Bay Area as well as international jazz artists such as Dave Brubeck, Marion Mc Partland, Chick Corea, and James Moody. The winning series included "Women of jazz on the Bay, " which featured artists such as Vicki Burns, Anna de Leon, Susan Muscarella, Frankye Kelly, Tammy Hall, Faye Carroll, and Denise Perrier. In March of 2004, Vicki released her debut CD which features original music, lyrics and arrangements of both familiar and unusual standards. Entitled "Siren Song" it was produced by Vicki and the acclaimed flugal hornist, Dmitri Matheny, who also arranges some of the material. Matheny describes Vicki's voice as a ".. wonderful, rich instrument.. and says that it was a ..pleasure to work with her on this project..!" Jazz critic Dan Ouellette says that she "..succeeds with rapturous, mystical beauty..."

Hi Vicki! Sorry it took me forever to respond, but I have just been so busy that I haven't had any times for the boards! My sisters still live in Saco, and I get up there at least once or twice a year. You all had some winter these past two years!!! How much snow did you get in Houlton? One of my dorm roommates lived in Houlton, and she picked potatoes every year!

Hope the music is going well. I hope to see you live one day! Send me your August schedule, and if I can I will come see you!
Warm regards,
Carole

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.

Grady Tate On Piano Jazz

Grady Tate began his jazz career as a much-celebrated drummer, backing such icons as Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, and Quincy Jones. Tate has since traded in his skins for a microphone at center stage, where he delivers smooth and soulful baritone vocals. With pianist John di Martino, Tate sings "Everybody Loves My Baby" and "Where Do You Start."

Woody Herman At 100: 'A Blues Player From His Heart'

He was a soulful reedman, an amazing talent scout for decades and a bandleader of one of the country's most popular acts. Born in 1913, Herman led "Thundering Herds" that were both big draws and well-respected by the likes of Igor Stravinsky. Here are five recordings which still sound fresh today.

Edmar Castañeda And Friends On JazzSet

Hear passionate improvisation across borders on Colombian harp, Argentinian bandoneón, Venezuelan cuatro and vibes from the U.S. In a set with Castañeda, his trio and special guests perform at the Americas Society in New York.
