'Nova: Musical Minds'
By MIKE HALE
“Musical Minds,” the season premiere of “Nova” on PBS, is based on the neurologist Oliver Sacks’s most recent book, “Musicophilia,” a collection of case studies of people whose brains have unusual relationships to music, cases in which, as Dr. Sacks puts it, “music gets them going to an extraordinary degree.” A one-hour program can’t approach the depth and texture of…

Our examination of the
Clave and the legacy of Africa upon the history of music comes to a close as does the month of June (which has proven to be a test of stamina with days upon daze of 96 degree air temperatures.) I would like to return to the old landmark of
Nouvelle Orleans.

I believe there isn't a person in the world who hasn't spent sometime thinking about Michael Jackson the last few days.It is of course a sad ending to a person who at one point had enough talent to spread around the world a few times. The one thing that truly comes into my mind is that there is a connection between Jazz and his success. Quincy Jones was himself a genius. In his concepts and his music. I loved the fact the on the Dude Quincy never played anything. It was a producers vision.A great…

Well, I FINALLY managed to get my new CD tracked three weeks ago @ Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville WA. The sessions went quite well, the band really smoked but the entire 4 day process of rehearsing and 3 days of sessions was physically and mentally draining -its taken me until now to really recover from it all! ( but I'm a happy camper -I've got great tracks to work with!)
I'll be editing and mixing the project the end of July for late fall release on Origin records.

The death of Michael Jackson comes as a surprise for one reason. My family loves Michael for his talent and artistry. Just a few days before he passed we sat for an hour or so watching his YouTube videos that my son had on his computer. We watched them on a TV hookup. We were so thrilled to watch him go through the paces he created. Not knowing of course, that in a few hours he'd be gone. What a shock. How could this be, we wondered? But, there it is..the King Of Pop...gone. But, as with other…

Chano Pozo was attributed, by Dizzy Gillespie in his own memoirs: To Be Or Not To Bop, this sentiment regarding the workings of what is now referred to as “Latin Jazz.” (Remember, this is Diz translating...)
Deehee no peek pani, me no peek Angli, bo peek African.
Both speak African. Danny Barker, our own keeper of memory was present and characteristically observant of this mix.…

I have not been keeping up with the Network of late but now that I am settling in I'll be checking in more often.
I am looking forward to connecting with all you southern cats (lol), so we can do some music together. I am a mainstream jazz guy, and will be looking for piano, bass and drum guys and
