I love jazz but sometimes feel boxed in by definitions and the way you have to conform to ideas not of your making. For me jazz is a frame of mind; an approach to life; freedom. This advice was given to, my friend and neighbor, Pete. When an important Cowbell gig with The Wild Magnolias had been at hand here in New Orleans: “Now... when you go to take a solo, act retarded for a coupla' seconds.” Still, fortunate for all of us, I have edited my first few seconds.
