I love jazz but sometimes feel boxed in by definitions and the way you have to conform to ideas not of your making. For me jazz is a frame of mind; an approach to life; freedom. Traced back to the days of slavery, music was about the only freedom we had and even that was curtailed and prescribed. This advice was given to, my friend and neighbor, Pete. When an important Cowbell gig with The Wild Magnolias had been at hand here in New Orleans: “Now... when you go to take a solo, act retarded for a coupla' seconds.” Still, fortunate for all of us, I have edited my first few seconds.
