November 4th, 2008 - All Ballot's

Firstly, Peace to Barack and Michelle, and Maya, and their families.

There's one less bullet in the world. And, consequently, one less ballot. The former ended the life of a young man at whose funeral I attended yesterday, and offered music for. I can't say much more, as of this writing; the family – headed by a well loved New Orleans musician – has not gone public at this time.

This is “very real.” It's news – so to speak – from the frontlines. I now recall, since I can… Continue

Barack Obama's Grandmother dies

Barack Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham has died from cancer, aged 86. Dunham helped raise Obama from age 10. The Democratic presidential candidate visited her in Hawaii last month, saying she may not live until election day.

November 2nd, 2008 - All Soul's

Have no fear. Only believe. That's just two of the more potent ideas that can be found in The Bible. It is obvious... (May I use that word?) Obvious that Barack and Michelle Obama have, both boldly and carefully, formed their dreams within the consciousness represented by Jesus of Nazareth. Barack has stated, into the camera: “I believe that Jesus died for my sins, and that is how Michelle and I are raising our daughters.” Now, I for one am still a bit dismayed at how big of a part the issue of… Continue

First Steps.

I think I am very fortunate to have a love affair with Jazz music. There are so many people out there in the world that don't know what they are missing. Jazz has enriched my life, and has added colors, and hues to the grey. After a long period of about 15 years, I did not sing or compose music. I had some personal tragedys that I had to work through. I have recently begun to sing again. I have done some solo recording of vocals in my studio, but now I feel it's time to sing in public again. I… Continue

October 31st, 2008 – All Hollow's

I will, wake the dead. I call upon all of my ancestors, from the beginning until now, as my thoughts flow further in time. I am thankful to be alive. To think, to feel. To communicate. To love. To be guided... to follow, to continue in this endless quest for a distillation of nature. I rise. Standing upon the shoulders of bold lovers and silent believers, I am a descendant of hope. Thus, as I still have breath – I will expand my capacity to hope. I am not afraid of the word: If. I drink to the… Continue

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Barbara Carroll On Piano Jazz

Pianist and singer Barbara Carroll was host Marian McPartland's second guest during the first season of Piano Jazz. Thirty years later, Carroll makes a return appearance to reminisce with her friend about their experiences at the Hickory House and the Oak Room. Carroll gives a charming performance of "Very Early" and McPartland improvises a musical portrait of her guest.

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.
