June 17, 2012 – Father's Day.

Dear Reader, peace to you and yours today.  It has been a long, long journey traveling through life since I last spoke up here. I'm glad you made it thru too!

I'm in the City of Angels – which is not too far from Maison Musique – as I am blessedly visiting with my family. It's the perfect time to tell of what I know, and what I love.

My father was a good man. A good man in the true sense. And as his third and youngest son, last of all his children, I…

September 6, 2011

You've got to fight – and party – for your mind.

Dear Reader, yours truly am a man of few words today. Here, out from under T.S. Lee [Allen] all is cool... almost calm, and necessarily collected. Labor Day '11... so far, so wet... and not as wild as one would expect.

Honestly, I feel more threatened by the storms of “Peak-Media-Season '11” than by any force of nature.…

“Eat the rich!”

Welcome back Dear Reader; and Happy August to you. While I have long maintained that happiness (as in: “the pursuit of...”) is highly overrated, I do sincerely hope that you are now and have been playing it cool... all the way; and I submit this small buffet of thought.

A quarter of a century ago, the phrase, “eat the rich” first entered my consciousness by way of a song which was written and recorded by one of America's truest originals.…

July 5, 2011

There is a great awakening occurring now.

In my times as a New Yorker, I had the opportunity to work as a member of the cast of a musical entitled, A Tapestry of Dreams. This play was conceived and written by a man named, Nat Bucknell; the music was composed by the noted, Carol Hall.

In one scene, I delivered the line, “The Japanese character for crisis, also means enlightenment.” This is, as far as I can tell, a great truth of nature which the Jazz man is…

June 7, 2011 - Homer Plessy Day!

Dear Reader, with summer '11 upon us, and the Mississippi river subsiding within us, and storm season again taking its rightful place, [ALL HAIL...!] I say: Here's to time!

I am glad to be back home in New Orleans; where one can't go too, too far without bumping into to some sign or plaque acknowledging our history. [I can't help but joke about the sign which was placed, not too long ago, at the end of my block stating the name of my neighborhood as the "Suburb…

March 15, 2011 – Saint Danny's Day

“Roll with the punches!”

Danny Barker had a bold, and oftentimes, daring perspective on seemingly anything and everything under the sun.

He unflinchingly viewed the foibles of human life with a wry sense of humor and a deep self-knowing; both of which were hallmarks of his singular style.

He summed up his life's ethos as the quintessential Jazz journeyman, offering the words which with I open this day's very special post. Danny Barker…

September 11, 2010 – Almost A Decade.

I talk too much.

[Listen to an air-check from a radio show broadcast live in New Orleans, 10:00 p.m.-Midnight, Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Try clicking here... It's also at the top of the Playlist on my Main Page.]

I admit it; and of course many have said that generally, in quality and quantity, we talk… Continue

August 29, 2010 – 5 Years Old!

What can I say?

Well... first, I am grateful to be here in New Orleans. There are those – at least one learned man I know – who predicted that we wouldn't make it this far. He was wrong; ah yes... he was wrong.

What's next? Dear Reader, let's dance...!

[Danny spins & speaks! From, Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy (1954.) I myself have been to Beale Street; Memphis was the first… Continue

August 17, 2010 – 13 Days.

“There's no place like home!”

Well... Dorothy, truer words you never did speak after!! Judy Garland continued on to play the great role of, American Cultural Icon... once she delivered the message (1939) – an answer preluded by the immortal song of hope, Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Today, I proclaim St. Dorothy's prophecy! and as it so appears that I could raise Old Dot's offer: As my home is New Orleans... Truly I say to you, Dear Reader, there is no place like my home!… Continue

July 27, 2010 - Day 99.

Faith... Fact... Friendship... Fate... Who's your daddy?

In other words, Dear Reader, what do you rely on? Now, despite the passed two weeks of reflection that being away from home has provided yours truly, I will confess to an idleness regarding this central question of existence. Nevertheless, let's see where this goes...? It's no revelation as from whence my current quandary comes. Since it has been almost two weeks of monitoring the so called, integrity of the Macondo oil…

July 14, 2010 – Bastille Day

Recherchereur Cheri, Mais oui...! I am escaping from New Orleans, Louisiana on Le Quatorze Juilllet, 2010...!

It has been written, “All good Creole boys must one day return to Paris.”* But, no such luck this time. Nonetheless, I am indeed excited to be headed to Our Nation's Capitol. (via Baltimore.) I will be visiting with a great friend, and mentor, A. Billy S. Jones-Hennin. I will state… Continue

July 4, 2010 – America's Independence

“How will it end?!” – Louis Armstrong, as per Waller & Razaf

Hey wait... Dear Reader, please don't go! It is really the beginning and; it's going to be what it's going to be.

This last sentiment was bestowed upon me by Ellis Marsalis... oh, about four and half years ago. It was my first Friday after having returned to New Orleans from Brooklyn where I had eventually evacuated to, following Hurricane… Continue

May you now open the link below and read this very well-written overview of the problem and, a necessary solution. (Louisiana demands justice, not charity -- by James Carville.) Love and gratitude to the water. May the Petrochemical Age now begin to come to a peaceful end. Amen.

May 31, 2010 – Memorial Day

Love and gratitude to the water.

Dear Reader, welcome back and; peace to you and yours. I begin with a seemingly simple puddle of words which now carries the weight of the sea. The phrase entered my consciousness by way of a Japanese scientist, Masuro Emoto, who studies the nature of water and, visualizes world peace. Dr. Emoto's work entered my consciousness by way of, Delia Nakayama, a writer and visualizer of many things... including world peace. It was a couple of years ago… Continue

January 18th, 2010 - Martin Luther King Day

“Then who can be saved?” was the priceless reaction of the

disciples of Jesus.

Well... just when I first thought, then you, that we were safe from the things in my head... the earth shakes. (Truth be told, I had the intention of enjoying the "day off" and not posting.)

Nevertheless... barely off my heels and; there is a need for so much healing. I'm grateful to say: I healed myself. What's next? More knowledge... desire... and quiet. Intention. Attention! There… Continue

January 12th, 2010 – Final Examination.

Dear Reader, peace to you and yours, today. This is my last post for this series, Afro-American Music:101. Firstly, I will again state that it has been my great honor and, (most times) my great pleasure to have carried on in this task of: editing, analyzing, and bringing to the internet... the mind of Daniel Moses Barker.

This blog began, January 13th, 2009 (the 100th anniversary of this great Jazz man's… Continue

January 5th, 2010

Happy New Year first of all. I hope we have... a million or two million more of them – if we can get over this summer... heh-heh-heh.

Dear Reader, I continue with my closure to this unique course in Jazz by opening this nth degree post with a quote from another legendary “Man with a guitar,” the great James Marshall Hendrix. These words opened his New Year's Night, 1970 introduction to what was to become a masterpiece; entitled, Machine Gun.

The legendary… Continue

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
