My story of my experiences as a Guitarist - Part 3 - Some Lyrics /Poems

16.12.2001.

I've got all it takes:

When I was young I heard my first Rock & Roll Band.

An' then I thought, "this is it."

I"m going to have my own R&R Band.

And I did !

It was'nt easy at first,

I missed my timing & key,

but the others in the band

were as bad as me.

Failed to get it going on the drum set,

I then thought bass guitarist is best,

But there was nothing in it,

No money, no fame,

Just a few gigs in Dingo clubs,

did'nt really get you a name.

There was'nt dough for gear,

There were'nt places to practise,

Chuck the guitar , said my dad sadly,

A guitar will never get you salary.

So I took a job and then some,

They gave me poverty and made me lonesome,

I took a wife to fill my life,

She broke my heart with grief & strife.......

And now,

I've got all it takes .....

to play the Blues.

GIDEON

You've all heard of Elvis

Janis Joplin & Jimmies Morrison & Hendrix.

And how they went out in a flash,

Overdosed on some kind of hash.

Their deaths were mourned by millions

As their records sold more trillions,

It was as if Royalties were given

To them even in heaven.

But let me tell you the untold story

Of an unknown rocker for who you should be sorry.

Gideon Hartmann was his name

Died on the street in '73 without fame.

Dad left mama poor till she died,

Gideon by her side,

Had stopped going to school,

Had only learnt to play the fool.

Gideon had a good guitar hand.

Joined the HOT RAIN band,

Entered a beat contest

And the band was judged best.

The band took Gideon to the finals,

In Bombay a small revival.

The band came back broke,

Opiomed out on dope.

Back in Bangalore,

Money there was'nt anymore.

As the Band split up,

Gideon ran out of luck.

Down the road Gideon slipped back,

On Mandrax and Arrack.

He sold his Bass Guitar to me

Forty bucks ans a few square meals.

This guitar got my own band going,

But I always got a heavy feelin'

To see gideon on the streets,

No food, family, down beat.

Finally Gideon was found dead,

Some say exhausted & faded,

Unsung, Unknown, Untold,

This lost son of Rock & Roll.

ROCK & ROLL AND I

Rich man's son studying in a swank school,

I was born with a spoon, silver with a bit of Gold.

Finished School First Class,

Went to College & smoked grass,

& learnt to play R&R.

The boom went to my head,

College classes were dead,

I flunked my degree,

Had to take to the street

& survive on R&R.

I got a low down job,

Slaving for a slob,

Barely payed for my food,

Music became my only mood

whenever I played R&R.

My sanity in the end,

Was owed to my friends,

They've given me the thrill,

Money'll never give

by just playing R&R.

My friends & I did some gigs,

The money was never big,

But a poor man counts his cash,

Which he needs for his hash

just to keep on playing R&R.

I took a day job,

It did'nt even fill my gob,

So I found some guys,

Who were very nice

just 'cause they played R&R.

I grew my hair long,

Wore funny clothes bought for a song,

And showed to the rest,

What I did best,

was to play R&R.

But in the end, my friend,

I got a bit of money in the end,

Which helped me fill my gloom

Of Poverty Misery & Doom,

just by playing R&R.

Dear Mr. Mathews,

Thank you very much for your kind comments. You must tell me which part of India your Doctor neighbour comes from, as you may know we are a very diverse country. My running "autobiography" is far from complete as is my Musical career - so far I've written only upto the 1970s. I turned 60 last Friday and had a big bash at which about 25 of Bangalore's musicians - all I have performed in the past, came & played too. This was also my 200th. gig in year 2011. The next personal event is on Wednesday 5th. October. I will be performing a "puja" and worshipping the Godess Saraswathi (Of Knowledge & Music) and my several instruments - A "Veena", several guitars, assorted drums, stage gear etc. I will be posting the pics of these & my Birthday Party shortly.

Very interesting to know about your multi-cultural family. Do keep in touch, I really appreciate it, Regards, Srinivas.

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
