ERIC ALAN’S LATE, LATE SHOW & JAZZ RENDEZVOUS NEWSLETTER Friday 19th September 2008

Last week our invited guest did not pitch due to circumstances beyond our control and with the shock and sudden passing of one of South Africa’s greatest musical sons jazz pianist Bheki Msleleku, we were able to pay tribute the his genius through our show. We able to speck to Professor Hotep Idris Galeta, Johnny Mekoa, Fine artist Sam Nhlengethwa, Mfana Mlambo a good friend of Bheki’s and Langa Mseleku the late pianists brother.

It was an incredibly sad show but the joy was being able to listen to the wonderful music he made over the living years. It was also more poignant with the quotes I used as written by the John Anthony Matshikiza in an M&G review of the 2002 tour Bheki did with Chucho Valdes. Then to learn later through this week of the sudden passing of the wonderful writer and commentator John Matshikiza, what a most awful week it’s been when we learned of the passing after a long illness of internationally renowned Joburg based Ghanaian musician George Lee Kwame Narh Kojo Larnyoh. Visit his website at http://www.myspace.com/georgeleelarnyoh

George passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning releasing him from the terrible pain and suffering he was enduring for so long. He will be cremated in private on Friday, and a memorial will be held on Sunday, International Peace Day, at the Brahma Kumaris Inner Space Centre, 28 Judith Road, Observatory. 2:30 for 3pm till 4pm. 011 487 2800 / johannesburg@za.bkwsu.org;
George Lee Larnyoh was regarded as a big brother, uncle, role model and mentor to many musicians and non-musicians around the world.
As a bebop sax player George had few equals, as an arranger he showed his depth of musical understanding. As a composer his loving and caring nature was reflected in his lyrics. Peace, harmony, love and our need to pay attention to social injustices permeated his songs and were themes that recurred whenever a human or environmental tragedy unfolded. His gentleness drew children and animals to him instinctively they never feared his imposing stature, but felt safe and unconditionally loved and accepted in his presence.
Musically he was a hard task master, but it was his element and he knew it from A to Z. George likened being a jazz musician to being an athlete, constant practice is needed, you have to have stamina, so do daily practice of the scales which provide the musician with a road map, but when you get to the bandstand you PLAY music. He was so patient that he could bring out the best in anyone whatever their level of musical skill, his only requirement, that they practice and do the homework.
He was released from the pain of ALS after suffering progressively for eighteen months when he passed on peacefully at his home early Tuesday morning. George had no fear of death, and wanted no pity as he surrendered to this dreadful illness. As his wife of almost thirty years I am humbled by the love and respect he has always shown me. I give thanks for the trust he put in me that he allowed me to care for him to the end.

He will be sorely missed but his presence will continue to be felt throughout the world in his music. Goodbye gentle giant.

Review:
This was one of the first super-groups to emerge during the height of the world smooth jazz boom and still remain relevant today in the dying days of American Smooth Jazz Radio. Fourplay remains the leader in the new Adult Contemporary Jazz subgenre that has grown out of Smooth Jazz.
This new album raises the level and shows the way forward to many smooth jazz artists who stick to the boring style that has become so loved by the smooth jazz musicians of the world. Elevator music, yes most of it remains so played by the majority of artists in this mindless musical arena, but Fourplay and a few other groups are moving the music into a new direction and keeping the music alive and interesting.
Fourplay are the only group of musicians to have been recognised, in 2007, by the U.S. Congress, who awarded the group with a Congressional Record, being recognised as a distinguished members of the music industry.
The track, Cape Town written by Nathan East and his brother Marcel and Cousin Alan Dones takes one on a journey to South Africa when their grandparents travelled to our country to do missionary work in Middledrift. It is quite beautiful with the vocal track by Nathan East and additional vocals are sung by James and Lucinda East’s great-grandchildren, Marcel East’s six-year-old son Elijah, and Nathan’s eight-year-old twins Sara and Noah.
The members of Fourplay all have classical music training and it is evident in the final track on the album, Sebastian.
Fourplay fan will flock to add Energy to their collections and new fans will enjoy listening to the group for the first time. Overall a beautifully crafted album, in my opinion and hope many will agree with me. I been a fan of Bob James for years and the various band formations he’s been involved with over the years. This new album is most enjoyable for me and is in the CD shuttle and will remain there for some while.

Musicians:
Lucas Senyatso, (bass & leader) Rob Watson (drums), Zoli Bacela (guitar), Marcus Wyatt (trumpet), Africa Mkhize (keyboards), and Siya Makhuzeni (vocals)
Track Listings:
Black & White; Redemption; Re Lathile Setso; It feels like love; Hymn for Molobye; Freedom; Baby You; Keep it on the down-line; Mmabatho Ya Di Busa; A Dream; Refilwe's Lullaby
Review:
This debut album from Lucas Senyatso renews my faith in local jazz musos. The term jazz has often been hijacked by many musicians who wouldn’t know a riff from glissando. Senyatso’s album, All of Me, is an excellent example of the high standards that most jazz fans demand. The recent SAMA awards for jazz made a mockery of the genre, but with artists like Senyatso, we have been delivered from the hell that is elevator muzak. Although Senyatso is a new name to most jazz followers, he has a solid reputation as a journeyman in the music business. As he puts it, ‘I’ve been around, that’s for sure.’
He cut his musical molars playing with some big names: Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, and Gloria Bosman. The eleven tracks on the CD offer this bassist a platform to showcase his skills on the six-string version of his instrument. Although the album will have universal appeal, the musical style is definitely Afro-jazz, and it is this style of jazz that many Americans found appealing during my recent visit to the US. We tend to think that jazz must come from the US to have validity. Senyatso thinks differently, and I am convinced the album should be released internationally. All but one track was composed by Senyatso, confirming his ability as an all-round musician.
Lucas Senyatso is a graduate of both the Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho, and the University of the North, where he completed a degree in communications. His song writing skills led him to compose songs for both Gloria Bosman, and Sibongile Khumalo, and at the age of 34, this man is about to make his niche in the local music scene, especially jazz. The album is distributed by EMI. I hope to hear more from Lucas Senyatso. He deserves international exposure. I hope to hear more from Lucas Senyatso and will be sending CDs to a few jazz radio stations in the USA.

Review:
I met German trumpet player / businessman some years ago at a community radio station I worked at shortly after he arrived’ with his wife in Cape Town. He was so taken with the musical talent he discovered he immersed himself in and got involved in the Cape Town music scene. He invested in some property and soon set up a jazz club to which he bravely enticed the jazz loving people of Cape Town. Great times were had buy all who visited at Ortsiva. Klaus had continued to release CD’s working with local musicians as is his policy when visiting a country, the previous one was a tribute to Charlie Parker featuring Cape Town born Alto supremo and acknowledged Parker exponent Harold Japhta. Which is a really good album. 2007 saw Klaus visiting Brazil and the urge to record another album soon began to itch and April in Rio is the result. All of the tunes on the album are Klaus Werner-Pusch originals baring one, Bronislaw Karper & Paul Francis Webster’s Invitation. Brazilian Sax man Mauro Senise and his Latin brothers add a different dimension to the album and though not an entirely Latin flavoured album it stays true to Klaus’s Be-Bop roots. The album sadly is not freely available but write to Klaus at ortsiva@gmail.com to find out how to obtain a copy of April in Rio, the globe trotting jazz lover is currently in Zurich rehearsing with Makaya & the New Tsotsis which includes Andy Scherrer (ts), Stephan Kurmann (b), Fred Lang (p) and Klaus. They play a festival in Heidelberg Germany tonight are including a number of south African Composers material in their set, Damn wish I was there.

Review:
Dixieland fans stand up and rejoice, for today we visit New Orleans via the latest offering from Putumayo's World of Music. Some of the artists on this CD, New Orleans Brass, you know, others are unknown outside that world of Louisiana’s brass bands. A touring group of jazz fans will visit the New Orleans Jazzfest beginning at the end of April. Let me know if you want details. Here is a description of each track and the performers: Bourbon Street Parade James & Troy Andrews. This is really New Orleans, Let’s Fly Down, and features Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Blow, Blow Tenor The Yockamo All-Stars An eclectic mix of R&B, jazz, you name it, these guys have tremendous fun. Great trumpet by Leroy Jones! Whoopin’ Blues; Leroy Jones, one of the people credited with the NO brass revival. Great bass line from the tuba player. I’ll Fly Away; John Boutte was born by the river, on November 3, 1958, the eighth of 10 children and has a genuine street singer character. Over In The Gloryland; Glen Andrews and The Lazy Six play a rousing version of one of your favourite marching tunes, growly trombones and all. Dreamboat; Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews proves the slide trombone has no peer in this genre. It’s All Over Now; The Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Dr John start with an ambling tuba and soon Dr John’s gravelly voice swings into this Bob Dylan hit. St James Infirmary Bob French’s Original Tuxedo Jazz Band with Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown. Brown almost brings tears to eyes with this famous lament. Preservation Hall Hot 4 on trumpet, bass, guitar, and drums serve up a swinging, and very musical version of the standard. Second Line (Blow Da Whistle Kermit Ruffins is a trumpeter and vocalist who sounds 70, he was born in 1964! Saint (Street Beat) Dukes of Dixieland. There is no information that the Assunto family are in this band, but it is a great street version. Review:
A very busy lady, Eliane has been this year with her second release in such a short space of time. This album is a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Bossa Nova, which feature her sultry, sexy vocals ably accompanied by her regular rhythm sections and some fine orchestrations by Rob Mathes.
This is an album that will be appreciated by many a South African Latin jazz fans and the gorgeous Brazilian born pianist, singer/songwriter returns to some of the greatest Bossa tunes ever written by a number of her countrymen. It has 14 tracks of pure listening pleasure and it is an album that will not remain off the CD player for long, the album debuted at no 1 in the French charts where its has been for the past three weeks and is the no vocal jazz album in Japan. If we had jazz charts here in S.A. it too would have made its debut at no 1. This talented lady has been around for a while, making her solo album debut in way back 1987 after a short but successful stint with Steps Ahead, since then she has just gone on from strength to strength. Go get Bossa Nova Stories today, you won’t be sorry.

Review:
Stix Hojeng is a talented jazz pianist, and he plays jazz that is jazz, not the ersatz pap that masquerades under the vacuous name of world music. Sure, his talent is a little raw, maybe even agrestic, but it is a pure talent that deserves to be nurtured. This album, Ko-Kasi, is a one-man tour de force in that he performs, composes, writes, and produces the entire album. The twelve tracks are all Hojeng originals. This must have been some project, and to ensure success, Hojeng has gathered around him some very accomplished musos: Gerald Louw (bass), Ayodele Gabriel Solanke (saxophone), and Marius Smit (drums). I was astounded to read that, apart from all the credits due to Hojeng on this album, he also, on some tracks, programmed the strings, bass, and drums. The guy must be busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger in the studio! If there is one weakness, and it is tiny, it is with the vocals. Hojeng needs to give a little more attention to holding the tune, and avoiding the odd flat spot. Stix Hojeng was born into a musical family in Kimberley. His mother was a vocalist, his father a trumpeter, and his brother a drummer. Although Hojeng initially flirted with the guitar as a pre-teen, it was the piano that became his true love, a fact for which we should be thankful. His exploration of the instrument in his chosen style of jazz is very effective. This is easy-to-listen-to straight-ahead jazz, and you will play it in the car, and when socializing with friends. It may also just be the catalyst that Hojeng needs for national recognition by being signed to one of our recording companies. (Sunday Independent 8 July 2007) Oh! After all the work Stix Hojeng has put into this album, did I mention that he is also distributing it himself. BARLEYCORN MUSIC CLUB NEWS
--Thirty-plus entries for the Songwriters' Competition thus far, and although more are on the way it's fewer than we've had in previous years ... no doubt quality will compensate!
--There's still time to get those songs in though, since next Monday 22nd is the new and very final last ultimate Final date for entries! Forms at the door, or phone Hugh Coutts (076 845 7032 or 021 551 7025) for details
--Pass the word if you know of someone who can put interesting lyrics to a good tune, in any genre, as long as it's entirely original, has never previously been performed in public and can get it to us (on tape or CD) by next Monday and ... who knows what could happen after that?
--And if you're interested in what appears at the other end of the song-writing process, do not miss the Finals, on Monday 6th October, when the ten best pieces (as picked by the committee) will be aired and from which the three winners will be chosen (by a panel of 5 judges, themselves musicians) for fat prizes!
--Alan Eatwell (021 448 7357) has had the most amazing good fortune with his line-up for next Monday! Lounging around 'Touch of Madness' in Obz as is his custom, he happens upon ALVIN DYERS & HILTON SCHILDER, truly amongst CT's jazz royalty, and persuades them to pay us a visit! Alvin (no relation of Bartholomew!) is a master guitarist & Hilton a keyboard wizard & together they're magic! It's been a long time since we last heard some subtle, intelligent jazz at the Barleycorn & this will be a treat indeed
--Then Alan meets up with NAREN SEWPAUL who, although known for his work in theatre in SA, also happens to be a fine musician, performing original material in a 'folk' idiom, citing Neil Young as an influence
--And it gets better, when Al makes a chance phone call & discovers that DAVE LEDBETTER is back in CT from a one-man musical invasion of the Gulf States and is available for a set! Always entertaining and an incredibly fine muso, it will be a privilege to hear Dave again
--Finally, he invites the always-popular HUGH & TRACEY COUTTS to play some solid 'folk' material & it transpires they've rehearsed with SILV TADERO, a flautist of note & together they'll play some gentle acoustic Blues
--All round, an excellent way to spend the evening so we'll see ya there!
"Whether you think you can or you can't, either way you're right". Henry Ford

SOUTH AFRICAN, WORLD & AFRICAN ARTS AND CULTURAL NEWS
WESTERN CAPE

The charms of music
A charming new exhibition on the theme of indigenous music, entitled ‘Voices of the Ancestors’ opens at Iziko South African National Gallery on 24 September and runs until 15 March 2009.
Music is common to all humans, like the rhythm of our heartbeat or breathing. To create music, ingenious sounding forms are produced, aesthetically pleasing both to the ear and the eye.
Iziko has a superb collection of musical instruments from Southern, Eastern and Central Africa that are presented here as sculptures. However, it is through an appreciation of the music, performance contexts and the instrument itself that we can begin to grasp what an instrument means to the people who made and played it.
Over one hundred works have been selected from Iziko collections to suggest the rich diversity of musical instruments created by African people for their own use. Exhibited for the first time, seventeen different types of instruments are drawn from four classic categories - idiophones (self-sounding instruments), chordophones (stringed instruments), aerophones (wind instruments) and membranophones (drums).
The title of the exhibition, Voices of the Ancestors refers to the belief that in certain contexts, the spiritual world can be accessed through music.
Visitors can engage in the audible dimensions of African sounds in the Chill Room where interactive programmes and listening equipment awaits. Exciting education and public programmes and a special celebration on Heritage Day are planned.
For further information contact educator Kathy Coates at Iziko 021 467 4661 kcoates@iziko.org.za or the curator, Carol Kaufmann 021 467 4672 ckaufmann@iziko.org.za

PANSA's BrainBank Bingo
Join PANSA for an extravaganza combining the entertainment of a variety show with the excitement of bingo.
PANSA’s BrainBank Bingo promises an evening of safe and completely unpredictable fun.
Here’s how it works. Just like a traditional bingo game, when you arrive, you are given a ‘bingo’ card containing numbers, which you cross off as they are called out. But, it’s not that simple. It is after all the Month of Performance. As each number is called out, anything and everything can happen. People sharing your table may suddenly jump up and play a cowbell, sing a song or share some chocolate. You may learn some new dance moves, get a massage or win a surprise for your table.
Who knows? Will you be sharing your table with actors who suddenly get up and perform or simply with other guests enjoying a delicious On Broadway dinner? Will you be the first person to cross off all the numbers on their card and shout Bingo! Will you win something? Probably! Will you be surprised? Definitely! Will you play a part in an incredible off-the-wall night? Absolutely! It’s a game of chance: you have no idea which celebrities will perform and even the performers won’t know if or when they are appearing on stage. You will leave knowing more than you did and doing more than you realised you could (but no solo performances or karaoke required!) We can’t guarantee that you will tick off all the numbers on your card but we can promise an evening of lots of prizes, surprises and sneaky disguises! On Broadway, 88 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town
Sunday 28 September 2008 at 7 pm Tickets R 200 per person, includes dinner, show and bottle of wine (cash bar)

National Arts Festival announces – ‘Writing Beyond the Fringe’
South African writing is due to receive a fresh injection of inspiration from the National Arts Festival with the launch of a new initiative, Writing Beyond the Fringe. Writers who have written at least one script that has previously been staged on the Fringe programme of the National Arts Festival qualify to participate in this exciting project.
Four writers will be given the opportunity to take their literary works beyond the South African borders. The project is a partnership between the National Arts Festival and the deBuren and Passa Porta literary projects in Belgium and The Netherlands.
Four writers will be selected to each write a new story that reflects on the theme, Remapping the World. The focal point of the story should be a character whose life has been remapped by either local or g***** changes of the last decades. The writers will be invited to read the stories in front of an audience at the 2009 National Arts Festival. In addition, the Brussels-based deBuren Project will pay the four writers three thousand Euros each. The works will also be translated into French, Spanish and Dutch.
The four stories will be broadcast by Radio Netherlands Worldwide on Radio Books, a series of recorded stories specially written to be listened to and not to appear in print. The stories, which should last between 20 - 30 minutes (approximately 5000 words), are read aloud by the authors in front of an audience once only. After the reading, they are broadcast on the radio and distributed via the Internet, where they can be listened to or downloaded free of charge.
"Storytelling is one of our oldest traditions. Distributing South African stories which have a strong continental and g***** resonance through the World Wide Web is a product of our present age", said Festival Director, Ismail Mahomed.
"This project allows writers to think of the World Wide Web as a stage which will allow them to engage with an international audience", he added.
One of the four writers will also be considered for an invitation to participate in a fully sponsored one-month writer’s residency at the Passa Porta Writer's Festival that will take place in Brussels during 2009.
This opportunity is available to South African citizens or those with permanent residency in South Africa. It is confined to new writers who have had a maximum of one publication in book form, or whose work has not previously been published in book form, although it may have appeared in magazines, journals, or newspapers.
Application forms and more information on how to participate in the "Writing Beyond the Fringe" programme can be downloaded from the National Arts Festival web-site www.nationalartsfestival.co.za . For more information, contact the Fringe Festival Manager, Kate Axe Davies, on 046 603 1163 or the Festival Director, Ismail Mahomed, on 046 603 1149. Closing date for submission of application forms is Tuesday 30 September 2008 and the deadline for receipt of the completed work will be Monday 24 November 2008.
The 35th National Arts Festival runs from 2 – 11 July 2009 and is sponsored by The Eastern Cape Government, Standard Bank, The National Arts Council and The Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund.
About the National Arts Festival: Now in its 35th year, the Festival began in 1974 and has grown to be one of the leading arts festivals in southern Africa. Its objectives are to deliver excellence; encourage innovation and development in the arts by providing a platform for both established and emerging South African artists; create opportunities for collaboration with international artists; and build new audiences.

SA Youth Choir to send musical ripples through Aardklop
Fresh from its multiple choral triumphs in Canada, the South African Youth Choir will be bringing its stirring vocal sounds to the Aardklop National Arts Festival in October.
The South African Youth Choir’s performance at Aardklop on 1 and 2 October, at the Conservatorium in Potchefstroom, will be followed by a concert with the Akustika Chamber Singers at the St Alban’s Cathedral in Pretoria on 4 October.
This busy schedule is all in a week’s work for this dynamic, in-demand local youth choir, which is steadily accumulating a solid reputation on the world stage.
In July, the South African Youth Choir (SAYC) participated in the International Choral Kathaumixw festival in the picturesque town of Powell River, Canada, and stepped away with several accolades at this g***** gathering of choirs and conductors.
In the folklore category, the choir scooped first place with a 94% score, as well as taking home the laurels in the chamber music section, clocking an impressive 96%. The SAYC also acquitted itself admirably in the category for youth choirs; coming second overall with 92%, and another score of 92% secured it a runner-up position in the contemporary category.
Fronted by esteemed conductor André van der Merwe, the SAYC was established in 2005 and proceeded to make its mark on the international music scene almost immediately, winning a gold diploma at the prestigious Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales the following year.
This Cape Town-based choral outfit, which features a diverse array of young singers drawn from across the cultural spectrum, is set to blow away audiences in Gauteng and the North West Province with its energetic performances.
The Aardklop performances take place on Wednesday, 1 October at 7.30pm and on Thursday, 2 October at 9.30am.
Following this, the SAYC will be joining voices and forces with Pretoria choral outfit the Akustika Chamber Singers at the St Alban’s Cathedral in Schoeman Street in the nation’s capital, on Saturday, 4 October at 7pm.
The Akustika Chamber Singers, led by Christo Burger, are also on a creative high at the moment, having won the Pavarotti trophy for Choir of the World and the Mixed Choirs section at this year’s Llangollen eisteddfod.
To secure your seats for these uplifting choral music events, book at Computicket. For more information, phone 011 793 2334

This comprehensive collection of exhibitions, workshops, installations, demonstrations, functions and retail opportunities has steadily gained momentum and is now probably the most expansive, exciting, significant and diverse exhibition of visual art and heritage to be held in this province and is considered to be one of the most important group showings of the year in South Africa. The list of participating artists reads like a “whose who” of the South African art scene.
“We are incredibly proud and excited by the line-up and diversity of this year’s Heritage Festival,” says Kizo Gallery director Craig Mark. “We believe that together with our partners, we have created an all-encompassing art experience which will talk to the people of our city – from ardent art collector to passers-by with merely a passing interest in participating in the arts. The carefully selected range of events will ensure that a full spectrum of heritage and arts opportunities is considered. On behalf of the gallery, we invite visitors and residents to our city to spend time at the Kizo Art Gallery and the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in September and in so doing, enjoy a chance to explore first hand some phenomenal heritage and art,”
The Heritage Arts Festival wishes to acknowledge its valuable partners, the ever-supportive Gateway Theatre of Shopping; Independent Newspapers; the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism; KwaCulture; the Department of Economic Development; the Business Support Unit, Ethekwini; Committed Artists; Imax; Audio Excellence and the city’s Celebrate Durban initiative without whom this season would not be possible.

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Duke Ellington: Highlights Of His Twilight

The great composer and bandleader was distraught over the 1967 death of Billy Strayhorn, his songwriting and arranging partner of 28 years. But Ellington took Strayhorn's passing as an impetus, born of necessity, to increase his own productivity. Here are five examples.

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.
