Is American Idol the Only Way into the Music Business?

San Diego, CA, Saturday, September 26, 2009 — Budding stars that would leap at the opportunity to make it in the “American Idol” world now have their chance. Beginning Friday, October 23rd The Church at Rancho Bernardo will host wMw Academy of Vocal Flight’s first program for professional and amateur singers. Professional singers hailing from Los Angeles to South Africa will offer instruction to hundreds of singing hopefuls at an intensive “For Singers Only” workshop. Aspiring vocalists interested in enrolling in the three-day course should register now because the highly coveted spaces are limited.
Classes will focus on strengthening vocal technique, improving live performance, navigating through the music industry, and will conclude with a concert featuring some of the students and well-known professionals.

Dorian Holley, Associate Music Director and Vocal Coach of American Idol, who had been slated for Michael Jackson’s monumental “This Is It” tour as vocal director, will conduct an audition-specific class. He will share his winning secrets and insider knowledge for executing successful auditions, along with sharing his success story and some fascinating memories from performing and touring for all of Michael Jackson’s solo albums. Jazz greats Kevyn Lettau of the LA Music Academy, Peter Sprague, and Amber and Rob Whitlock will guide the attendees through intensive technique and performance coaching. R&B star Jim Gilstrap will be on board to share his insights on cultivating and sustaining longevity in the business. And yes, a little bit of country and a little bit of rock and roll will round out the mix. Rising country star Danielle Tucker, rapidly emerging pop-rock sensation Esjay Jones, and long-time rocker and vocal coach Karen Williams will guide students through marketing and breaking through as an independent artist.

Enrollment is already underway for “FOR SINGERS ONLY, Finding Your Voice, The Path to Enjoyment and Success in Music.

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Chris Potter Quartet On JazzSet

At the Village Vanguard, one flight down from the hubbub of New York City, in a tight space packed with people, we're about to embark on a musical odyssey by sea. Our captain is saxophonist Chris Potter, who's launching his Odyssey-inspired album The Sirens.

Pat Metheny And John Zorn: A Vivid Sound World

The two artists are known opposites in the world of instrumental music. On Metheny's latest, the jazz guitarist wrings an unexpectedly visual listening experience from Zorn's knotty compositions.

Sarah Vaughan: A New Box Set Revels In Glorious Imperfections

Divine: The Jazz Albums, 1954-1958 packs four CDs with Vaughan's music, recorded live or in the studio with bands big and small. Two live albums from Chicago nightclubs are standouts, partly when a performance threatens to slide off the rails.

Rudresh Mahanthappa On Piano Jazz

Mahanthappa brings an explosive blend of jazz and South Indian classical music to the studio.

Grady Tate On Piano Jazz

Grady Tate began his jazz career as a much-celebrated drummer, backing such icons as Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, and Quincy Jones. Tate has since traded in his skins for a microphone at center stage, where he delivers smooth and soulful baritone vocals. With pianist John di Martino, Tate sings "Everybody Loves My Baby" and "Where Do You Start."
