Jason Yarde & Andrew McCormack Duo Press Release

HaPpY NeW YeAr!!

Since Andrew and Jason played their first gig opposite Trio WAH! at London’s Vortex Jazz club in the Summer of 2008, much has happened…Their eagerly awaited album, MY DUO, is now the first release on the new, independent record label JoY aNd EaRs.

McCormack and Yarde went into the studio last January renewing their long musical friendship while journeying from classical lyricism to red-hot, raw, jazz energy over several original compositions (with Turnage and Bernstein along for the ride). The Duo have a long association of working together in many groups through Dune Music and are forging their way as individual composers with ever increasing success and notoriety both having gained commissions for the London Symphony Orchestra through the Panufnik and UBS Soundscapes programs.

MY DUO will be available soon for digital download on iTunes, Amazon and other sites and physical copies will be available from www.jazzcds.co.uk. But if in the meantime you want the real thing, you can purchase the beautifully presented, 6-page Ogun pack for the seasonally reduced price of £10 directly from www.joyandears.com.

"the partnership between Yarde and McCormack is so unmistakably fuelled by the reflexive spirit of jazz…It's a wonderful jazz conversation...Yarde has rarely played better on record, his solos here suggesting that while he's now feted primarily as a composer, his sax improvising has quietly blossomed to world class..."
John Fordham (The Guardian Dec 11 2009)

…both players seriously assert themselves as composers and the contrast in styles is pleasingly marked…The net result is an album of very mature performances and tight narrative focus that presents jazz composition and improvisation as infinitely fluid entities…
Kevin le Gendre (Jazzwise Dec 09/Jan 10)

Jason and Andrew are performing a number of dates around the UK over the next few months - check www.joyandears.com for more information.

The Jazz Network is exactly what the title suggests, a place where you get to mix and mingle with those who have not only an appreciation for Jazz but a forum to hear new up and coming artists as well. I've hooked up with so many of my old friends that I've lost contact with over the years here and it's been a great place to meet folk, appreciate good music and Musicianship. What an incredible idea!!

Woody Herman At 100: 'A Blues Player From His Heart'

He was a soulful reedman, an amazing talent scout for decades and a bandleader of one of the country's most popular acts. Born in 1913, Herman led "Thundering Herds" that were both big draws and well-respected by the likes of Igor Stravinsky. Here are five recordings which still sound fresh today.

Ever since he started becoming one of the best alto saxophone players in the world, Zenón has drawn from his upbringing in Puerto Rico.
