"How many holes you got in your head?"

I'm quoting the late, great, guitarist/banjoist, writer/historian, storyteller and great wit – Daniel Moses Barker. (13 January 1909–13 March 1994) If you are not hip to Danny Barker then it is my great honor and pleasure to place him in your consciousness. Indeed, my storytelling style, and motivation, is very much influenced by this man and his legacy. I never met him, but when Danny entered my consciousness just over ten years ago, as New… Continue

It's “Happy Monday” in New Orleans. “I survived” is a rather significant summation for a Sunday. Maybe not just any Sunday, since not just on any Sunday does a 152 year old Roman Catholic Church hold its last Mass service. The Archdiocese of New Orleans is deafly going forward with a plan to close and/or merge 33 churches in its jurisdiction – some of which are viable and, on higher ground. I'm speaking, that is, about the naturally elevated sliver along the Mississippi. I suppose that I'm… Continue

Can You Help?

We need a President who believes the economy should work for everyone, not just the few. We need a President who believes everyone should have access to affordable healthcare. We need a president who believes we should end the war in Iraq.

We need a President with good judgment and integrity, who appeals to what unites us. That' why I'm supporting Barack Obama for President.

We're just a few days from Election Day, and all the campaign's efforts are devoted to getting… Continue

I am fascinated by my life. I need to be. Fascination is my manner of broadening the simple and direct concept that has been a part of the lexicon of Blues People for a long time. “Laughing just to keep from crying.” I am fascinated by synchronicities, numbers, and patterns. I've always looked for the nuances of consciousness, at least the consciousness that I know of. I'm big on context. One of my tags during my time on WWOZ radio: “I do radio for people who are paying attention.” Indeed,… Continue

To be, or not to be... Data is the question. Sure, I would reinvent myself as an Shakespearian actor. It took me a while, but I got hip to this cat. Thank you, Bill. (Cohen, that is...) and King's County Shakespeare Co. The artist(s?) known as William Shakespeare left behind such hip and potent words for a man to really flex all of his language muscles by.

Nevetheless... Here I am, reinventing myself as a Datasian. Right… Continue

I voted today. I lent my voice, in this constitutional republic known as America to the cause of future peace and understanding among the peoples of the world. I counted my opinion as part of many who desire to live their lives free from tyranny and oppression. I cast my perspective upon a society where I see the possibility of unity and diversity, cooperation and tolerance. That's a lot of hope to pin on a political campaign, even this one. Nevertheless... What can I say? I've always been a… Continue

Jaijai, what a wonderful mission you've undertaken to create such a place for artistic minds to meet and share their hearts. A place to renew faded determinations, and revive lessened momentums. A place to display our wares and reconfirm to one another that we actually are on the right track.

I commend you, Jaijai, for caring so much that you created this castle of the heart for all of us. I want to share my praise for all of the new friends as well as old friends that I've met and will meet here in our castle. Here we can garnish the where-with-all, the strength, the conviction, and the selflessness through our symbiosis, to share our gift to the world with an unbiased agenda.

My mentor, Daisaku Ikeda says of art: "A beautiful flower delights and refreshes the hearts of all people equally, no matter what soil it grows in. That is the power of beauty. The same is true of great art. It is this spirit that the German poet Heinrich Heine sang of when he wrote that once the peapod bursts open, the sugar peas inside are for everyone to enjoy."

Let's be audacious, my friends!
